Finalists of the Philips Innovation Award 2018 announced

The finalists of the Philips Innovation Award 2018 were announced on 28 March.

During an Innovation Market at the Floating Pavilion in Rotterdam, 30 semi-finalists presented their ideas to an audience and fought for a coveted place in the final.

Each team had the opportunity to pitch their business plan in front of a full house of interested parties. The jury, of which Raimond Haan was a member on behalf of Arnold & Siedsma, had previously evaluated all the business plans based on the main themes of "innovation", "start-up", "market" and "financial", each of which had several sub-themes. The pitch formed an additional aspect of the jury's overall assessment.

Parallel to the pitches, the Innovation Market took place, in which the participants were able to talk to the judges and the audience, which included successful entrepreneurs, investors and students.

The Philips Innovation Award comprises two main categories: the "Innovators" competing for the Philips Innovation Award worth € 50,000 and the "Rough Diamonds" competing for the Rough Diamonds Award worth € 10,000. A team falls into the "Rough Diamond" category if it has been registered with the Chamber of Commerce for less than three months.

The jury chose the 8 finalists on 28 March.

The "Innovators" Closure, IV-Wear, Opt Medical, SPIKE Mobility and AcaBoo will compete in the final for the € 50,000 prize.

The "Rough Diamonds" Circal Technologies, Ratio and MedCore competing on this date for the Rough Diamond Award.

The "Innovators" who will participate in the final and claim the prize package of € 50,000 are:

  • Closure is developing a service that can be used by relatives of a deceased person to easily close digital accounts, registrations and contracts;
  • IV-Wear has developed a portable infusion system that makes patients more mobile. This mobility also has a positive effect on the recovery;
  • Opt Medical focuses on providing a contraceptive option for women, particularly in third world countries;
  • SPIKE Mobility uses proven technology to develop an electric bike, and focuses primarily on the African market; and
  • AcaBoo is developing a streaming service for study books.

The "Rough Diamonds" who will participate in the final are:

  • Circal Technologies is working on developing a system that can convert harmful emissions from container ships to algae. The algae can then be used as an ingredient in medicines or animal feed, for the manufacture of bio-plastics or as biomass;
  • Ratio enables engineers to optimise and partially automate a design process; and
  • MedCore has set itself the goal of giving medical specialists intuitive control over digital systems in an operating room.

The final will take place in Theater Rotterdam Schouwburg on 7 May. The winners will be chosen by the jury, chaired by Frans van Houten, CEO of Philips. When making its choice, the jury will pay particular attention to the impact, sustainability and feasibility of the business plans of the participants.

Arnold & Siedsma has been a partner of the Philips Innovation Award since 2012. This year we again had extensive contact with several participating teams and advised them on the possible protection of their Intellectual Property. In addition, the finalists mentioned above will receive extra coaching.
